Conflict Engagement

Equipping athletes, teams, and organizations with practical skills to recognize harm, intervene effectively, navigate conflict, and support team members

Training Active Bystanders

Training Active Bystanders (TAB) is a skill-building process that helps participants know when they are bystanders, to analyze situations, and evaluate consequences to take action. Through a train-the-trainer (T4T) model, TAB is taught by peers to their communities. Each group walks away from the experience with a changed and empowered vision of an individual's role in creating a supportive and engaged community.

Celebrating Team

2-Hour Athletic TAB Workshop

Our 2-hour Athletic TAB workshop can be delivered in person, virtually, or in a hybrid format. TAB is conducted synchronously by two trainers. Both the in-person and online TAB workshops are interactive and include activities, story sharing, small breakout group exercises, large group exercises, and practice opportunities.

Our Athletic TAB curriculum was written by athletes, psychologists, and professional performance consultants, and includes stories and examples pertinent to athletes, including discussions of harm-doing common in athletic spaces such as hazing, toxic competition, harassment, and team culture, and discussions of mental health and substance abuse, including recognizing warning signs and how to ask for help.

Training for Trainers (T4T)

During an 8-hour session, typically split over two or three days, those who have participated in the TAB workshop learn to teach it. Upon completion, participants receive a training certificate that allows them to conduct the TAB curriculum in their communities and schools, making TAB more sustainable and accessible to the community.

Advanced Workshops and Ongoing Learning

Those who have been trained in TAB participate in ongoing discussions of advanced TAB topics. These lessons are available in multiple formats: asynchronous through our monthly newsletters and Facebook group; synchronous workshops for groups of 10-20; and community discussions led by TAB staff.

Topics for advanced learning include:

Conflict Engagement Workshops

Our conflict engagement workshops are interactive, skill-based sessions designed to help athletes navigate harm, disagreement, and challenging conversations with greater confidence and care. Each workshop is designed as a one-hour team or small group session and can be offered virtually or in person. Sessions include practice scenarios, facilitated discussions, and collaborative brainstorming, allowing participants to apply concepts to their teams and departments.

Our conflict engagement workshops are led by professional athletic counselors who are also trained in conflict resolution through our nonprofit, Gathering Currents. Our team can provide a needs assessment to figure out which workshops, topics, and formats are the best fit for your team and athlete needs.
